What is SUDS?

SUDS (Sydney University Drama Society) is Australia’s oldest continuing theatre company. It is also one of the largest clubs and societies on campus, with over 600 members. SUDS aims at creating engaging theatre that allows students of all levels of experience to either simply get involved or expand their fledgling talent. All shows are 100% student run. SUDS stages the majority of its shows in the Cellar Theatre – positioned underneath the Holme Building. The running of SUDS is managed by an executive made up of ten SUDS members elected at the SUDS AGM.

How can I get involved?

SUDS puts on a new play every two weeks!! This means there are endless opportunities for you to get involved! If you are a star in the making or just want to give performing a go then auditions for every production are open to every SUDS member. SUDS members are notified of auditions fortnightly through the email publication THE WASH. If directing, writing or designing is more your thing then any SUDS member can propose a production at a SUDS meeting (held fortnightly). At these meetings proposals will be presented and then voted on by the SUDS membership for approval.

What if I have no experience?

If you have never acted in, directed, produced and written a play before then SUDS is perfect for you. The great thing about SUDS is the opportunity provided for you to get involved. Do not be deterred if you don’t get into your first play or your first proposal is beaten by another; some of SUDS’s most successful actors, directors and productions have been knocked back before. In a theatre company where there is a new play on every two weeks, there is always a new chance to show your talent.

Any perks?

There are many great perks to being a SUDS member. All members are given discounts to any SUDS show as well as to many shows throughout Sydney’s theatre companies.

What else?

SUDS not only provides a fantastic gateway into the theatre world, as shown through alumni such as Neil Armfield, it also provides a community in which solid friendships are made. There are great social events to enjoy, such as the up coming Oscars Night function to be held at Manning Bar, and endless fun times to be had on the stage.
